How ads took over AI

It started with a few “Sponsored” labels in Bing Chat. Three years later, every major AI lab is selling ads or building the infrastructure to do it. This is the full record.

Where this is headed: US AI search ad spending is projected to reach $26 billion by 2029, up from $1.1 billion in 2025. OpenAI alone is targeting $25 billion in ad revenue by the end of the decade. AI Overviews already appear in roughly half of all Google searches.

Microsoft launches "the new Bing" with ChatGPT built in

Microsoft integrated OpenAI's GPT-4 model into Bing, providing a ChatGPT-like experience within search. At launch there were no formal ads in Bing Chat, but Microsoft signaled intent to monetize through advertising.

Google launched SGE as an experiment in Search Labs, showing ads "above and below" the AI snapshot. Google also experimented with shopping ads integrated into AI-generated product recommendations, marked as "Sponsored." This was the first time Google demonstrated how ads would coexist with AI-generated search answers.

Microsoft launches Ads API for Chat, enabling third-party AI ad monetization

Microsoft announced a solution allowing online services, apps, and publishers to monetize their own AI chat experiences. This was the first attempt to create an ad infrastructure layer for conversational AI beyond Microsoft's own products.

Amazon debuted Rufus, an AI shopping assistant embedded in Amazon's mobile app, trained on its entire product catalog, customer reviews, and community Q&As. No ads were included at launch.

Marketers gained access to AI-powered campaign creation and management via Copilot within the advertising dashboard. By mid-2024, the tool supported 14 languages.

Announced at Google I/O 2024, AI Overviews replaced SGE and became available to all US searchers. At Google Marketing Live 2024, Shopping Ads within AI Overviews were formally introduced.
